Wreck of the Richard & Charlene: Reviews & Ratings
This is truly an amazing and delightful place! The food is all fresh and caught from Shem Creek! It is a little pricy and the service is quick but not that quick! The food and atmosphere is amazing and a lovely view of Shem Creek! The video attached is there amazing rice!
9/10/25 Interesting entrance…the restaurant was clean and funky. Meal served on paper plates. Our waitress was excellent and attentive. The shrimp was so fresh and delicious. Ice tea was cold and delicious. You can see the fishing boats coming and going. Try the key lime bread pudding! We enjoyed our meal at this funky place.
You have to appreciate a place that knows exactly what it wants to be. This isn’t the place for everyone. I had the Seafood Platter, on which everything was fried but everything was properly cooked. The fish, shrimp, scallops and oysters must have been cooked separately because they were each properly prepared. I also saw a beautiful sunset. The entrance looks like a service door, the kitchen is open and loud, and the decor is purposely haphazard. Still, it’s a great spot for seafood. I highly recommend taking the red door.
Very rustic shrimper dock restaurant. Recommended by locals, off the beaten path back on Shem Creek. Great good , friendly service nice sunset view. Don't let the cover fool you!
If you’re anywhere near Charleston, you must visit The Wreck of the Richard & Charlene. It doesn’t get more authentic than this — right on the water, laid-back atmosphere, and some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste. We had the shrimp and scallops, and both were absolutely perfect. Cooked just right, and seasoned with what I can only describe as their signature house herb mix — subtle, aromatic, and spot on. The shrimp come straight from the local fisherman next door, who also sells fresh seafood. Seriously, bring a cooler — eat first, then walk over and grab some fresh-off-the-boat shrimp for home. The vibe is super relaxed: yes, you’re eating on paper plates, but who cares when the food is this good? Honestly, I’ll take flavorful and real over fancy and forgettable any day. The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Pro tip: come at sunset. The view is unreal — golden light over the marshes, boats swaying in the harbor… it’s pure coastal magic. Fun fact: several scenes from the Netflix series Outer Banks were filmed right here, and once you’re there, you’ll see why. Highly recommend. We’d come back in a heartbeat. This is one of those rare spots that gets everything right — from the food, to the setting, to the soul.
Loved the atmosphere and the food was great. Grilled scallops were like butter and grilled shrimp was exceptional. The waitress was not pleasant at all and acted as if she didn't want to be there. Only person that came across that way in all our Charleston experiences.
If you’re chasing the real deal when it comes to fried shrimp, The Wreck of Richard and Darlene is it. No frills, no fuss — just perfectly golden, lightly battered shrimp done right. • Shrimp: Local, fresh, and fried to crispy perfection without being greasy. Salty, sweet, briny — everything lowcountry seafood should be. • Atmosphere: Casual waterfront vibes with just enough grit to remind you you’re in a working harbor, not a tourist trap. • Service: Friendly, fast, and no-nonsense. • Bonus: Cold beer, hush puppies that slap, and sunsets that feel like a reward. Come for the shrimp, stay for the vibe. This place delivers exactly what it promises — a five-star local experience.
I had been wanting to eat here. We came for dinner around 6:45 and I was disappointed that we couldn’t eat outside. It was a beautiful sunny day with a gorgeous sunset. Not too hot and humid. Honestly perfect night. You can have a drink outside but couldn’t eat dinner. We waited about 15 min for a table. We were seated. Friendly service. Ordered drinks and we ordered a play seafood platter and a triple combination (grilled). Big portions. Seafood and hush puppies were good. Rice was over salted. It’s nothing to write home about on the inside, I guess that’s where Wreck comes into play. But service, once we were seated was good and on point.
